Mühlkanal Neighborhood, Salach DE, 2019
The history of Schachenmayr as a collectively responsible company commits to a socially, culturally, and ecologically sustainable transformation and revitalization of the area. This heritage, with its characterful industrial monuments, provides a robust framework within which careful construction can take place.
Once a workplace for 3,000 employees, the Schachenmayr area will become a home for up to 600 new residents and 200 jobs. The new neighborhood offers the opportunity to reclaim a place in the community that, through its history, structure, and substance, serves as a carrier of identity. The “Werkstadt” Schachenmayr, with a versatile range of flexibly usable spaces, enables the combination of living and working through various stages of life and for different lifestyles.
The historically industrial character of the area is preserved and strengthened through the careful placement and design of new buildings. The unique spatial qualities of the factory buildings are maintained during the renovation, and the facades are faithfully restored to their original architectural statements. In the eastern part of the area, the industrial identity is continued through a formulated settlement of terraced houses and the hint of the former mill canal.
