ELKZ Parish House and Apartments, Zurich CH, 2022

Next to the listed church, a new building is being constructed, featuring rooms for the church community as well as apartments. This project arises from the desire to set the components of the ensemble in a clearer relationship to each other and to give the expressive sacred building a more prominent appearance by making the new building more subdued. Accordingly, the new building has a geometrically simple form and is set back from the nave. This creates a low intermediate structure between the two parts of the ensemble – effectively a built “joint” – with a new central entrance foyer. On the curved street, the new building is set back, articulating the secondary access to the gallery and a newly created bicycle shelter. The existing entrance portal no longer appears as an appendix leaning against the church but now functions as an independent facade of the intermediate structure, crowned by a roof volume that ascends towards the slope.
